Kids and social media--What do YOU think?
I'm a mom, and a member of HASTAC. That means I use social media regularly, like technology and the 21st century lifestyle that includes technology and social media, and that I have a wellspring of concern about my child's safety. I'm probably exactly like millions (billions?) of other people in these respects. I wonder about how to teach my pre-teen internet and online safety without inducing anxiety or fear, or, alternatively, an attitude that since it's all available, it's all OK. I worry about the ratio of screen time to imaginary play, about the lack of computers in her Montessori school, and I can't help but be completely befuddled by the typical gender breakdown of kids who live to be online and kids who don't care (Why is this and is there any way to change it? Is there a good reason to want to change it?).
So this morning I saw this blog post, obviously written by a mom, and I read it with relish. And I thought of the HASTAC network and wondered what youall think? Are these the sorts of things you'd tell your kids (even if you don't have any)? Are these the sorts of things you'd want to be told if you were a kid today? Let me know. I'm just beginning to have this conversation with my kid, and I know it's going to go on for many years.
