Last year Duke hosted a screening of the "Sita Sings the Blues," an 82-min. animated movie by Nina Paley (who, to my mind, is a genius). Prior to the screening, Nina and Jennifer Jenkins, Director of Duke's Center for the Study of the Public Domain, had a dialogue on copyright, public domain & independent filmmaking. Ms. Paley is very concerned about copyright issues and has taken on the world of copyright and public domain with all the intensity of a pitbull. This is from her website/blog (http://blog.ninapaley.com/):

But I'm trying to figure out the dominant one.  And the question is: hand drawing with ink on paper, or drawing directly into the pooter using a vector drawing program (Flash)? Behold two approaches saying basically the same thing: "How Memes Reproduce."

Check it out--she's looking for input from smart people. I'm sure your input will help her to create groundbreaking work.
