Help bring HASTAC to SXSW
Mandy Dailey and I represented HASTAC at South by Southwest Interactive 2010. (See our SXSW tag for some blog posts about it.) We had a great time, learned a lot, and even hosted an impromptu happy hour to meet and connect people from the HASTAC network. in 2011 we're hoping to have even more of a presence by proposing two HASTAC-related panel sessions.
For the past several years, SXSW has run an interesting process which allows people to publicly pitch ideas for panels on their web site, where others can comment and vote on their ideas. This semi-public process accounts for 30% of the decision on which panels are selected. (The rest is SXSW board and staff input.)
There are two panels being proposed by HASTAC staff members this year: Learning 2.0: Academia in the Digital Age (by me and Fiona Barnett of HASTAC Scholars) and Crucial Technologies and Techniques for Online/Offline Collaboration (by Sheryl Grant of the DML Competition, see her blog post). I hope you'll read their descriptions, then comment and vote on the at the SXSW site. I've already come across some other proposals from folks in the HASTAC network (looking at you, John Jones). If you are also pitching a panel, please tell us about it in the comments.
Hope to see you in Austin!

Using Twitter to improve college student engagement
I'm proposing a solo talk (yes, I know-- rare in the sxsw world) on using Twitter to improve college student engagement. I will provided evidence (from my own controlled study of using Twitter in the classroom and from the literature) showing that Twitter can be used in educationally-relevant ways to improve student engagement and grades. Furthermore, I'll provide best practices in using Twitter in the classroom so that others can engage their students in similar ways.
