Hubertus Bigend and The Social Network
"Hubertus, you're easily the richest person I've ever met."...
"It's a by-product," he said, carefully. "And one of the things it's a by-product of is my fundamental disinterest in wealth."
And, really, she knew that she believed him, at least about that. It was true, and it did things to his capacity for risk-taking."
- William Gibson, _Zero History_, pp.22-23
During the screening of The Social Network this past Monday I noticed that Jesse Eisenberg while playing Mark Zuckerberg states he doesn't care much about money twice in the film. For that statement to be repeated in the final film was an emphasis on that aspect of the character's personality that echoed for me when I hit the same sentiment expressed by Gibson's fictional Hubertus Bigend while I was reading Zero History this week.
In related news, William Gibson is visiting Duke this Tuesday September 21st on his book tour for Zero History, and I am looking forward to hearing him speak.
Given that I have associated the book, the author, and the film together, it seems only appropriate to include the link to the FaceBook event for Gibson's appearance at Duke as well as the event as posted on WRAL.com. Perhaps I will see some of you there.
