Weiss Urban Livability Symposium

Interdisciplinary Approaches to Community Activism through Engaged Scholarship

Thursday, March 18
5:30 – 7:30pm
at UNC School of Social Work, Tate-Turner Kuralt Auditorium

In our current climate of economic and environmental crises, it is especially important that scholars and activists connect and realize common goals. University scholars and community professionals join us to discuss social, economic, and environmental issues of significance to North Carolina and how they engage those issues to solve problems in their communities. They will share how they build relationships between academia and local communities to effect positive change and foster social justice.

Speakers:

        * Altha Cravey (Professor of Geography, UNC)
        * Gary Kueber (Durham developer and blogger, “Endangered Durham”)
        * Gene Nichol (Professor of Law, UNC and Center on Poverty, Work, and Opportunity)
        * Allan Parnell (Ph.D. Vice-President of the Cedar Grove Institute for Sustainable Communities)
        * Tes Thraves (Center for Environmental Farming Systems)

Moderator:

        * Don Nonini (Professor of Anthropology, UNC)
