CFP: Abstracts of papers are invited for presentation at the 19th
triennial congress of the International Association of Comparative literature /
Association Internationale de Litterature Comparee http://icla2010.org

Korea, 15-21
August 2010. Session II Locating Culture in the Hypertextual Age:
"Comparative Cultural Studies and Interculturalism in the Age of the
Digital Turn." Following the postulates of comparative cultural studies
(Totosy de Zepetnek 1999-), acts and processes of production, distribution, reception,
and transference of cultural objects form the symbolic structure(s) of cultural
phenomena which, in turn, are with impact of social (and economic) relevance. As
all communicative acts, productions of art are made-up of and between
interrelations among processes and participants. In turn, concepts in
scholarship such as intertextuality, dialogics, comparative literature,
cultural studies, comparative cultural studies, etc., describe some of the said
processes taking place. In the age of digital media, the focus of argumentation
has shifted to the intermedial relations between various productions of art and
media as to their location of distribution, knowledge transfer, and interactive
modus operandi, and an important move has been the acknowledgement that
cultural performances and processes have a material substratum dependent on
their mediating formats. Within the discipline of comparative cultural studies,
as well as in other theoretical and applied frameworks in the humanities and
social sciences, intermediality and multimodality represent innovative concepts
and practices. Papers in the panel are about the principal query as to what
their differences would be and how they are related and focus on 1) the
theoretical study of the nature(s) of the "medium"; "modes"
of communication and their cultural significance and relevance; 2) case studies
where art forms, production, and processes are  analyzed as metacognitive
tools, that is, as staging of interrelations we find in everyday life events;
and 3) the relationship between the emergence of intermedial formats and a
growing awareness of the importance and social relevance of interculturalism as
a concept and application. Please

CALL FOR PAPERS: Actual and Virtual Cities (Intertextuality and

The conference will focus on various semiotic frameworks that account for
cultural representation of cities, as the city has been a preeminent place
where we can examine the effect that modernity and modernisation have on human
communities. The history of culture and civilization has shown that the way in
which cityscapes are perceived and represented is closely connected with
people's individual and collective identities. Being more than just a physical
structure, cityscapes are, among other things, patterns of attitudes and
ritualized behaviour, networks of human connections, of customs and traditions
inscribed in certain practices and discourses. Thus, in recent years urban
sociology has turned its attention to the artistic representations of cities
and cityscapes in order to understand its social problems and develop normative
theories and ameliorative plans. On the other hand, in a world of increasing
online commerce and tele-work we're being challenged to reinvent public places
and re-knit our social fabric for the information age. In territorial terms,
those countries affected by the Internet revolution are experiencing a shift
from communities based on small-group-like villages and neighbourhoods and
towards flexible partial communities based on networked individualism where
people have multiple and shifting sets of glocalized ties. This is owing to the
fact that people bear in increasing number multiple locations of residence and
citizenships and thus multiple cultural allegiances. But it is also that the
public/private distinction which prevailed before the extension of private
control in modern capitalist societies is disappearing. Hence the argument that
intermediality is helping public discourse to colonize the confined spaces of
the home where individuals gain access to the public sphere through the
internet. With more and more companies offering their workers tele-work
options, the household unit becomes a primary cell of modern public relations. In
this context, the generalized interactivity of the internet, along with the
ability of anyone with access to put forward their own views in any of a range
of forums poses a threat to the distinction between public information -
epitomized in the notion of journalistic objectivity - and personal opinion, a
distinction central to the formation of the imagined community of the
democratic nation-state. Nor surprisingly, geographic and family ties, local
neighbourhood, city and nation are yielding new ways of "imagining" (Anderson 1983) cityscapes
and national spaces, with individuals becoming dependent on media and the
hyperspace to acquire a sense of belonging and attachment to others. We invite you to submit abstracts of 500 words +

STUDIES
ON INTERMEDIALITY/MULTIMODALITY AS INTERCULTURAL MEDIATION

This project focuses on socio-constructivist
approaches that, following Vygotsky , have maintained that the development of higher mental functions
is sociogenetic, thus arguing that cognitive development is first the result of
exposure to the social plane and then to the 
psychological plane,  a move that
is semiotically mediated in social
interaction.
This conception of human cognitive development offers
insights into the relations between mind development, education processes and
socio-cultural and technological implications. Due to its inherent characteristics, language is the most
pervasive modality for social interaction, and thus for semiotic mediation. In
our research we draw attention to the material vehicles of language, focusing
on the multimodal forms that are becoming common place in Computer Mediated
Communication. We claim that acts of
production, distribution and reception of cultural objects form the very
symbolic structure of cultural phenomena, and that these performances are
located in the materiality of informational exchanges.
Furthermore, we
indicate that discursive practices and images form the complex multimodal
network of signifying practices that constructs realities, rather than simply
representing them, and that socially constructed meaning or
what we call "culture" takes place through the negotiation of
stories, images, and meanings, that is, through performative,
jointly-constructed agreements, power relations, and the authorisation and
legitimating of social positions
. Finally, we claim that the
study of art is a powerful metacognitive tool, staging the kind of
power-relations that students can find in everyday life situations. This claim
is further enhanced with the use of multimodal forms of support. Thus, our
final aim is to work towards a new framework on multimodal social semiotics and
its implications for the study of Computer Mediated Communication and
Humanities Studies.

 

A)
This theoretical framework should focus on the following points: 1) a semiotic
study of multimodal formats and their differences; 2) historiographical
discussions on the changing discursive patterns in structural textuality -from
intertextuality to intermediality- and 
how this patterns can be found in previous aesthetic and
representational responses to changing technological patterns, particularly in
the avant-gardes; 3) reflections on
the impact of popular culture on changing media patterns; 4) reflections on
aspects of globalization and technology; 4) studies on the changing role of
producer/author and consumer/receiver into a new blended category of the
collective networked co-user/participant, and the emergence of social software;
5) research on the role of translation and re-mediation, since digital texts,
images, audio, video and cultural objects in general undergo continuous medial
alterations, appropriations and re-appropriations (re-mediation) that find
their way across their territorial point of origin with everyone now appropriating
and changing the culture of everyone else through the increasingly interactive
potential of networked computing; 6) the development of interculturalism in a
growing global informational world where the degree of autonomy of each culture
is significantly reduced; 7) the influence of education in the creation of an
intercultural conscience tending towards cooperation; aspects of intercultural
didactics, interpersonal relations and also accessibility.

 

B)
The practical result of the project is a new generation social software online
environment, a multilingual CMC (Content Management System) which will include
blogs, a wiki and webquests through the site. Some materials will be translated
from George Landow?s websites but it will also include links to texts, audio,
video and images at museums and sites of interest for the comparative study of
art as metacognitive tool.

The translation process will take place using a Wiki with
the collaboration of several graduate students. This wiki-collaboration is yet
another interesting aspect because it offers student training in collaborative
translation.

ESTUDIOS EN
INTERMEDIALIDAD/MULTIMODALIDAD COMO MEDIACIÓN INTERCULTURAL

El
proyecto se centra en formulaciones socio-constructivistas que, siguiendo a
Vygotsky, mantienen que el desarrollo de las funciones mentales es
socio-genético de tal forma que el desarrollo cognitivo es el resultado de la
exposición a los planos sociales y psicológicos, un movimiento que resulta
'mediado' a través de la interacción social. Esta concepción ofrece una
relación entre las operaciones de desarrollo mental, los procesos educativos e
implicaciones tecnológicas. Debido a sus características inherentes, el
lenguaje es la modalidad más importante de interacción social, y por tanto de
mediación semiótica. Nuestra investigación llama la atención acerca de los vehículos
materiales del lenguaje, centrándose en los formatos multimodales cada vez más
extendidos en la comunicación mediada por ordenador. Mantenemos que todo acto
de producción, distribución y recepción de objetos culturales forma de manera
intrínseca la estructura cultural de los fenómenos y que estas acciones
performativas se localizan en la materialidad de los intercambios informativos.
Es más, indicamos que las prácticas discursivas construyen la realidad, y no
solo la representan, de tal forma que la construcción de significado social o
lo que llamamos cultura tiene lugar a través de la negociación de historias,
imágenes y significados, es decir a través de relaciones de poder, de acuerdo y
desacuerdo y de la autorización y legitimación de posturas sociales. Finalmente
llamamos la atención sobre el estudio del arte como poderosa herramienta
metacognitiva que escenifica las relaciones de poder que los estudiantes
encuentran en la vida cotidiana. De tal forma que el objetivo teórico final es

A) 1) un
marco socio-semiótico multimodal 2)un estudio historiográfico de los cambios en
los patrones de textualidad estructural, desde la intertextualidad a la
intermedialidad, y una investigación de cómo estos patrones se pueden encontrar

en las
respuestas a los cambios en formatos tecnológicos que se ponen de manifiesto en
el arte de vanguardia; 3) reflexiones sobre el impacto de la cultural popular
en los cambios de patrones de los soportes de información; 4) reflexiones sobre
aspectos de globalización y tecnología; 5) estudios sobre el papel cambiante
del productor/autor y consumidor/receptor y su fusión en la categoría del
co-usuario/co-participante conectado mediante Red en entornos colaborativos; 6)
investigación sobre la traducción como forma de re-mediación, y sobre el hecho
de que los textos digitales, imágenes, audio, video y los objetos culturales en
general sufren continuas alteraciones sufren continuas alteraciones,
apropiaciones y re-mediaciones en un contexto cada vez más desterritorializado
y transnacional, de forma que se producen fenómenos de apropiación cultural a
escala global; 7) el desarrollo de la interculturalidad en un mundo global
donde el grado de autonomía de cada cultura se ve reducido; 8) educación y
conciencia intercultural, relaciones interpersonales y accesibilidad.

B) El
resultado práctico es un Gestor de Contenidos multilingüe, que integre software
social (blog, wiki, etc) y con materiales traducidos de las webs de G. Landow
(a varias lenguas, si conseguimos financiación europea; se ha solicitado una Independent
Grant del European Research Council). Este gestor de contenidos busca
proporcionar un entorno virtual para el estudio de las relaciones
interculturales a través del arte y la literatura en el aula.
La traducción de los materiales se
realiza con la colaboración de varios becarios/as y estudiantes utilizando una
wiki colaborativa de trabajo co-coordinado. Resulta novedosa la implicación de
los estudiantes y el trabajo colaborativo en entorno wiki que ayuda a formar en
tareas de traducción.
