Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital Humanities and American Culture
The program in American Culture Studies at Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in digital humanities and American culture, to begin July 1, 2010. The program in American Culture Studies is an interdepartmental research and teaching program built around multidisciplinary approaches to the study of American culture and society. Fellows will have the opportunity to work closely with core faculty, graduate students, and a continuing postdoctoral fellow in American Culture Studies, as well as with faculty across the university. Additionally, the individual in this position will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty pursuing quantitative text analysis and digital humanities in English, history, psychology, political science, and elsewhere. Special attractions at Washington University include the Humanities Digital Workshop (HDW) and the Center for Empirical Research in the Law. The main goal of this postdoctoral program is the intellectual development of the fellows and the department through productive academic interaction. Fellows are expected to be in residence during the fellowship period, apart from research-related travel. Teaching responsibilities include one course each fall and spring semester, as well as supervising directed study for a small number of undergraduate students. Courses are likely to be mostly or entirely in the fellow's substantive discipline; while the department will attempt to provide an opportunity to teach a course related to digital humanities, this cannot be guaranteed. Fellows are expected to participate in the intellectual life of American Culture Studies, the HDW, and other units relevant to the fellow's research and teaching interests. The remaining time should be devoted to the fellow's own research and writing.
Required Qualifications: The individual in this position must have completed his/her doctorate since 2006, and must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. before July 1, 2010. An individual from the humanities whose research programs use quantitative analysis of digitized texts to extend or to contest current understandings of American literature, history, or culture is sought.
