My name is Asiya Wadud and I am a master's student in the Department of City and Regional Planning at UC Berkeley. I am interested in the intersection of new media and urban planning, and the potential for new media applications to facilitate civic engagement. In 2008, I created Forage Oakland, a neighborhood community barter network that captures and redistributes surplus fruit within Oakland, California communities. A year-long collaboration with Youth Radio, winners of the 2010 MacArthur Foundation 'Digital Media and Learning' competition, has allowed us to create a web-based app that will facilitate fruit bartering by connecting residents of a given community. My work focuses on neighborhood cohesion and community participation, and explores how new media can facilitate such engagement.
