Nick Sousanis is a doctoral candidate at Teachers College, Columbia University. His dissertation on “unflattening,” centers on the importance of curiosity in learning and will be undertaken entirely in comic book format. Prior to his arrival in New York, he was heavily involved in Detroit’s arts community where among other things he co-founded www.thedetroiter.com, an arts and cultural web-magazine and served as the founding director of the University of Michigan’s Work:Detroit Gallery. Sousanis is also the biographer of legendary Detroit artist Charles McGee. Samples of his educational comics can be seen at www.spinweaveandcut.com.

New York City based writer, artist, educator Nick Sousanis is a doctoral candidate in Interdisciplinary Studies at Teachers College, Columbia University, and is in the midst of developing his dissertation in comic book form. Prior to his arrival in New York, he was heavily involved in Detroit’s arts community where among other things he co-founded www.thedetroiter.com, an arts and cultural web-magazine. From 2005 to 2007, he chaired the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit (CAID) and served as the founding director of the University of Michigan’s Work : Detroit Gallery. During his time in Detroit, he came to be the biographer of legendary Detroit artist Charles McGee, which is forthcoming from Wayne State University Press. He also taught public speaking and writing at Wayne State University, all the while active teaching tennis to students of all ages. His educational comics can be seen at www.spinweaveandcut.com.
